Roy Sugarman MA Clin Psych PhD, Uni. NSW: We were not genetically engineered to be happy. If we were, we would have been dead by nightfall or dawn the day after creation. We were engineered to be jumpy and cautious and afraid of many things that theoretically could do us harm. Happy and content is a dangerous state in a rain forest or savannah, there needs to be a core anxiety that protects and defends.

Give me death the day after creation ;) X Kel

I just found out I came 13th in my category for the triathlon on Saturday. Pretty pleased with that! Great support from organiser and swim coach, Jim, and swimming compadre, Jo. Good on 'em for standing out in the cold and wet to spur us on and make sure we did another lap of Arthur's Seat (grrr)

Also, the results for the Edinburgh marathon relay came out. Can't imagine running a full marathon in under 3.5 hours, but easy as a team effort! Can't tell you how utterly relieved I was to be only running 10 as opposed to the whole 26.2 miles. According to me I ran it in 1 hour 11 mins. But we weren't officially timed individually, only by team.

But does time really matter?! NAAA. Both events were enormous fun with a top vibe. Felt totally energised as a result. Good for me!

Definitely felt better... Edinburgh Triathlon yesterday and couldn't wipe the smile off my face I enjoyed it so much! Pity about the pissing rain... But, great course, excellent vibe, good folk and energised as a consequence. Just wish I hadn't gone out drinking until 5:30 this morning to ruin all that good work... OOOOOPH.

Having a bit of a what's wrong with me moment. Feeling fit, in good form, out there doing things, but just no blokes on the scene... NONE. Nothing. Zip. Diddly. Really getting sick of my own company some times. I think a major factor is that when I am out and about it's pretty much 9/10 times with my lovely mate, Ben, and most people put us together as a couple. Not that I mind I must say, as he is spesh... but that just doesn't seem to be a happening thing! Mountain biking, swimming training, out drinkin' etc. he's always there and I don't get a sniff of interest from other men. But then again, there ain't anything out there that I've seen anyway, so not sure what I'm worried about. Been here 18 months and other than the odd fling, it's dead in the water here male species wise. What's WITH that??

Parents have arrived in town. Wonderful. Bizarre to see them wander down the main street in Edinburgh to come meet me. Just can't believe they're here. Having said that, they are both so busy with a golf tour, I've only seen them two nights out of five. Will hopefully catch them tonight for father's day. Wednesday night, mate Todd is up from London. His Dad and my Dad have known each other for something like 50 years. So it will be nice for the 4 of us to all go out for a night on the town.

They will head back down south for early July and then come collect me July 12th and we'll head up north to do an Island hop. Really looking forward to it. Stay tuned for trip plans. And fingers crossed the rain holds off!

Fantastic morning run this morning; two laps of Arthur's Seat. The first with my running chum, Kirsten, and the second on my Todd as she ran home. For the first time I actually saw the end of a rainbow! Could run right to the tip of it! No bloody gold though... humph.

It's been an activity packed weekend gone by. Friday night I skived an early hour or two and headed up to Fort William on the North West Coast of Scotland. Absolutely stunningly scenic drive through the mountains and valleys of Glen Coe.

Friday night I'm afraid we hit the pubs too hard. Met up with some other mountainbiking mates and enjoyed catching up far too much into the wee small hours. Great vibe up there.

Sonya and I decided we had to punish ourselves for over indulging by climbing Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain (about 4500 feet). Saw four seasons in one day. I started off in my tank top and ended up hiking through thick fog and snow towards the top with absolutely sodden trousers. Got a bit bored towards the end to be honest, as there was nothing to see except fog and rocks. But summit we did. Made me feel totally inadequate being passed by joggers!? I'm not kidding when I estimate about 50 people were running up and down the bugga!

However, as Sonya and I completed the climb in 4 hours 50 mins (normally takes people 7-8 hours), we felt we deserved a fish n chip meal at the Ben Nevis Inn at the base. Rubbing our tummies after a feed, and having been watered and dried off standing under the toilet hand dryers forever, we met up again with two lovely boys from Wales coming to the end of their hike. We'd overtaken them, passed them on the way down and then found them wet and miserable. Poor chaps had their egos crushed to hear we'd left after them, came down, sat in the pub for 1.5 hours and they'd just finished.

Saturday night I piked it at the pub far too early for a girl with a party animal (not) reputation to uphold. Headed back to the comforts of the Fort William Backpackers. Great wee place overlooking the waters of Lochlinnhe. Recommend it to any weary traveller.

Sunday was a thrilling day of downhill mountain bike racing for the World Cup 2004. Amazing and totally insane speeds these guys and gals hurtled down the mountain tracks. Very exciting.

This weekend is the Edinburgh marathon. Thankfully not running the whole length this time. I'm doing the first leg around Arthur's Seat and Old town (my haunt) which lasts about 6.5 miles. Should be great to get it out the way and then come watch the other three do their bit.
